Beyond the textbook

History can feel distant. It does not have to.

Money is often taught as dates, laws, and objects behind glass. But during these ten years, it was woven into the everyday choices of families, merchants, sailors, soldiers, and public servants.

01

Too much, too fast

A defining decade can become a blur of events without a story that connects them.

02

Objects without people

Coins and notes gain meaning when we understand whose hands held them — and why.

03

Learning without wonder

The most lasting discoveries happen when learners can see, touch, ask, and imagine.

Fun times at the fair!

Our first S.S. Central America Collaborative Educational Exhibit brought historic questions to life at the ANA World’s Fair of Money® in Pittsburgh.

We hope you were able to visit our first S.S. Central America Collaborative Educational Exhibit at the American Numismatic Association’s “World’s Fair of Money®” in Pittsburgh, PA August 25-29. However, if you missed it, we provided new interactive learning opportunities for all ages such as:

Lifting

A canvas bag holding a replica of what “$5,000 of 1855 Gold Rush era double-eagle coins” would have weighed! (It weighed over 17-pounds!)

Smelling

Whale oil used in lamps on the S.S. Central America. Whale Oil Lamp…and whale oil vials to smell… from the personal collection of Greg Darnstead.

Exploring

The “small-change coin-pile” in the sand with shells demonstrating world coins of the period. Using samples of pre-1857 world coins (U.S. and European) this display depicted how a “coin pile” may have looked when the shipwreck was discovered.

Seeing

Rare images of “Paper Treasures” recovered from the S.S. Central America Purser’s Safe: early bank-note gems, like this example from the “Manufacturers and Traders” bank of Buffalo, NY. This bank is still in existence as the M&T Bank!

Watching

In 3-D, how the remarkable “Garden of Gold” appeared to the S.S. Central America discovery team when it was found 7,200 feet below sea level!
