These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the website located at 10tumultuousyears.org (the “Site”), operated by No Small Change, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (“No Small Change,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) on behalf of its Ten Tumultuous Years initiative. By visiting, browsing, or otherwise using the Site, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

01   Who we are

Ten Tumultuous Years is a public history initiative of No Small Change, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, focused on research, storytelling, exhibits, programs, and publications about American monetary history from 1857 to 1866. Our organization’s federal tax exemption letter is available upon request; contact us using the information at the end of these Terms.

02   Who may use the Site

The Site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 through the Site. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

03   Permitted use of the Site

You may view, read, and share pages of the Site for personal, educational, and non-commercial purposes. You agree not to:

• Copy, reproduce, republish, or distribute substantial portions of the Site’s content for commercial purposes without our written permission
• Modify, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the Site except where permitted by law
• Use automated tools to scrape or harvest content from the Site in a way that places undue burden on our servers
• Interfere with the security or normal operation of the Site, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of it
• Use the Site to transmit unlawful, defamatory, or infringing material
• Misrepresent your affiliation with No Small Change or Ten Tumultuous Years

04   Our content and intellectual property

Unless otherwise noted, the text, research narratives, essays, photographs, video, audio, graphics, logos, and design of the Site are owned by No Small Change or used with permission of the rights holder, and are protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. “10 Tumultuous Years” and our logo are marks of No Small Change. You may quote brief excerpts with attribution and a link back to the Site for editorial, educational, or non-commercial purposes. For any other use, including reprinting images or substantial text, please contact us for permission.

Some material on the Site, such as historical photographs, coins, currency, newspaper reproductions, and artifact images, is drawn from public domain sources, museum and private collections, or licensed from third parties, and remains subject to the rights of those sources. We identify the source or collection where practical; if you believe an item is used without proper authorization, please contact us and we will look into it promptly.

05   Historical content and accuracy

Ten Tumultuous Years is an ongoing research and storytelling project. Our narratives, dates, attributions, and interpretations reflect the best information available to us at the time of publication and are updated as new research, sources, or corrections come to light. History is often contested, incomplete, or subject to differing scholarly interpretation. We make reasonable efforts to be accurate, but we do not guarantee that any historical account, date, figure, or attribution on the Site is complete or free of error. If you have a correction or a source we should consider, we welcome you to reach out; we credit reader-submitted corrections that we incorporate, when asked.

06   No professional, financial, or appraisal advice

Content about coins, currency, tokens, and other collectible or numismatic items is provided for historical and educational purposes only. Nothing on the Site is an appraisal, a valuation, or advice to buy, sell, insure, or authenticate any item, and it should not be relied upon as such. If you are considering a purchase, sale, or appraisal of a historical coin, note, or token, consult a qualified, independent numismatic professional.

07   Newsletters, subscriptions, and communications

If you subscribe to our newsletter or sign up to receive updates, you consent to receive communications from us by email. You may unsubscribe at any time using the link provided in those communications or by contacting us directly. Our handling of the personal information you provide is described in our Privacy Policy.

08   Donations and sponsorships

No Small Change is recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and donations made in support of Ten Tumultuous Years are generally tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. We will provide a written acknowledgment for qualifying donations and can provide our exemption letter upon request. Sponsorship benefits, program credits, and exhibit or naming recognition, where offered, are subject to the specific written agreement made with each sponsor or donor and are not guaranteed by these Terms alone.

Donations are processed through third-party payment providers, such as PayPal. We do not store your full payment card details on our own systems. Your use of any third-party payment provider is subject to that provider’s own terms and privacy practices.

09   Links to third-party sites and services

The Site may link to or embed content from third-party services, including YouTube, social media platforms, ticketing or event platforms, and payment processors such as PayPal. We do not control these third-party sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability, or privacy practices. Links are provided for your convenience and do not constitute an endorsement unless expressly stated.

10   Events, exhibits, and programs

Information about exhibits, programs, presentations, and events, including those presented in partnership with organizations such as the American Numismatic Association, is provided for planning purposes and may change without notice due to circumstances outside our control. Please confirm dates, locations, and details directly with us or the host organization before making travel or attendance plans.

11   Disclaimer of warranties

The Site and its content are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or that the Site will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free. We do not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any content on the Site.

12   Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, No Small Change and its officers, directors, volunteers, contractors, and affiliates will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, revenue, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of, or inability to use, the Site, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. We may update, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Site, and we may revise these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the Site after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms.

15   Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, without regard to its conflict of laws principles, and any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of the Site will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Maryland, unless otherwise required by applicable law.
